Dieseldorff coffee founders

Our Story

For over 135 years, the Dieseldorff family has been cultivating more than just coffee in the rich soils of Guatemala. They've nurtured a legacy of quality, sustainability, and deep respect for the land and its people over four generations.

The story begins in the 1880´s when Erwin Paul Dieseldorff arrived in Cobán. Of German-Jewish descent, he came to the young Republic of Guatemala at just 18 years old. Erwin didn't just see potential in the fertile landscape; he immersed himself in it. Erwin learned the Q'eqchi language and studied the vibrant Mayan culture spanning nearly three thousand years. Erwin became a pioneer of Mayan archeology. He collaborated with local Mayan leaders to protect Guatemala’s patrimony, funded archaeological excavations with his own money, and ultimately published three monographs on Mayan art and archaeology. His work has been recognized by institutions worldwide, such as the Smithsonian, the British Museum, the American Museum of Natural History in New York, the National Museum of Archaeology in Guatemala, and many more. In addition to archaeology, Erwin studied local medicinal plants and worked with the local Mayan community to advance agronomy and infrastructure.

At this moment in history, coffee consumption in Europe was booming. Erwin Dieseldorff recognized the opportunity and began exporting the coffee he had been cultivating in Alta Verapaz. His holistic approach, and his respect for the people and the land became the foundation of the Dieseldorff coffee brand and the quality standards that our coffee is known for to this day.

Each generation since has built upon this foundation, adapting to changing times while maintaining their commitment to excellence. Erwin Paul Dieseldorff expanded exports to Europe, while his son William opened doors to the American market.

After their passing, Erwin’s granddaughter led a transformative shift from exporting green bean coffee to offering roasted and packaged specialty coffee, bringing Guatemala's finest directly to consumers. This spurred a new era of growth for the brand. With the same love of the land and people, she and her daughter began creating micro-lots in collaboration with artisanal coffee farms in various regions of Guatemala, such as Antigua, Acatenango, Atitlán, and Cobán. Now Dieseldorff's presence is expanding further to share the family’s coffee heritage and expertise through carefully designed experiences, such as cafes and live events.

What sets Dieseldorff apart is its longevity and ability to grow and adapt while staying true to its values and roots. The Dieseldorff family's 130-year journey, from just one person’s passion to an internationally recognized brand, is a testament to their enduring commitment to coffee, family, and heritage. The family invites coffee enthusiasts to be part of a continuing legacy of timeless craftsmanship, distinctive flavors, and sustainability. Each cup represents not just a superior coffee experience, but a connection to the land and people who have perfected this craft for more than a century. Choose Dieseldorff coffee, and participate in a tradition of quality that spans generations and continents, rooted in the heart of Guatemala.
